> Whoop and Oura have sold recovery scores for years. Apple's version arrives on a $399 watch with no test of its accuracy yet.

The Series 12 and Ultra 4 add two health scores. Readiness weighs your activity, your sleep and your overnight vitals into one read on whether your body is ready to train hard today. Health Age is the slower one, meant to show whether your habits are moving your body's estimated age up or down over months. Apple already had Vitals for overnight baselines and Training Load for workout intensity, and Readiness is the recovery layer sitting on top of them. The new Health Sensing System is what feeds it, reading heart rate every five seconds and heart rate variability every five minutes.

Whoop, Garmin and Oura have sold recovery and longevity scores for years. [Reviewing the Whoop 5.0, Digital Trends](https://www.digitaltrends.com/wearables/apple-watch-gets-readiness-health-age/) found its Healthspan feature useful for tying sleep, activity and fitness to an estimated physiological age, which is the job Health Age is being given. The scoring is new and nobody outside Apple has tested it against anything. Series 12 is still rated at 24 hours, the same as Series 11, even with the sensor reading that often, and it adds up to 10 hours of outdoor workout tracking and a 15-minute charge that covers 12 hours of use. Apple credits larger, power-efficient green LEDs in [the rebuilt sensor](https://idevice.com/apple-put-the-series-12-upgrade-inside-the-sensor), and has not published how much power they save. Series 12 starts at $399 and reaches stores on September 18.
