> Apple's spec sheet gives the Duo's under-display camera an aperture and a frame rate and no megapixel count. Its 1080p ceiling puts the sensor somewhere between two and eight.

Every lens on the [iPhone Duo](https://idevice.com/phones/iphone-fold/roadmap) has a megapixel count except the one you cannot see.

The outer front camera is 12 megapixels. The two rear lenses are 48 each. The FaceTime camera hidden beneath the 7.6-inch inner screen gets an aperture, a frame rate and a list of software features, and no resolution at all. MacRumors went through Apple's tech specs page for the Duo and found f/1.8, Center Stage, ultra-stabilized video, Animoji, wind noise reduction, 1080p recording at 30 or 60 frames per second. The number every other camera on the phone carries isn't there.

That video ceiling is the only hard evidence anyone has. The outer front camera shoots 4K at up to 60 frames per second, and the main rear camera reaches 4K at 120. Shooting 1080p takes about two megapixels. Not shooting 4K puts the top of the range somewhere under eight.

So the sensor lives in a band four times wide, and Apple hasn't said where in it.

There's a physical reason the lens is fast. Light gets lost passing through a display, and f/1.8 buys some of it back, against f/2.2 on the outer camera. What that trade costs in a finished photo is the thing Apple hasn't described, and it won't be clear until people have the phone.

The camera also isn't invisible. The patch of screen above it lacks the anti-reflective nano-texture coating that covers the rest of the panel, so it catches ambient light as a glossy dot, and the pixel layer over the lens is likely thinner than its surroundings. Apple's own marketing draws a soft circular shadow at that spot. A video posted by Instant Digital on Weibo shows the reflection landing harder than the render does, depending on the angle you hold it at.

Samsung has been here. It shipped under-display cameras through the Galaxy Z Fold6, then gave up and put a conventional 10-megapixel punch-hole camera in the Z Fold7. Apple is starting with the technique Samsung walked away from.

A December 2023 report had LG Innotek building an under-display camera for Apple, using a freeform optic lens array meant to cut distortion and recover brightness lost to the panel. Nobody has confirmed that's the part inside the Duo. This is Apple's first attempt at the technology in a shipping product, and the company has volunteered less about it than about any other lens on the phone.

Pre-orders open at 5 a.m. Pacific on Friday, October 16, with the phone in hands on Friday, October 23. Buyers reading the spec sheet in that week will find a blank where the number goes.
