# Fairphone's Fairbuds 2 launch October 14 with seven replaceable parts

Fairphone's second pair of earbuds launches on October 14, and each one is built from seven parts you can replace yourself. The Verge reported the date, the part count and a US price of $119, with the buds going on sale in Europe before they reach the US.

That price runs the opposite way from most sequels. The original Fairbuds debuted in Europe at €149, about $162. Fairphone has not confirmed the $119 figure itself. Its own contribution so far is a short teaser posted on September 28, a green pair under the line "Your sound. Made better."

Two sound changes are reported. The new pair gets improved Bluetooth and support for LDAC, Sony's codec for high-resolution streaming. Fairphone has not published battery life, driver size or noise cancelling details, and The Verge's report does not include them either.

The shape is changing more than the spec sheet. The first Fairbuds were a small rounded bud that sat in the ear with nothing hanging below it. Leaked images from a Dutch tech blog show a stem on the new pair, and a black finish alongside the green. Whether that stem takes taps or squeezes has not been shown.

Fairphone is best known for phones built to be repaired by their owners, and the first Fairbuds carried the same idea into audio. Owners could replace almost everything, including the battery inside each earbud and the battery in the charging case. Lose a single bud and Fairphone would sell you one bud, not a whole new pair.

Seven replaceable parts is the only repair detail reported for the new model.

Which seven matters more than the count. The earbud batteries were the part most likely to wear out on the first pair, and they were on its replaceable list. Nobody has said whether they are on the new one, or what a replacement part will cost. Until Fairphone publishes its parts list, $119 is the price of the hardware and nothing more is known about the price of keeping it.

The launch is about two weeks away. The date, the price and the part count come from The Verge. The stem and the black finish come from a leak. Fairphone's own announcement will be the first time the company puts its name to any of it.
