> Set up a Withings scale or watch from October 12 on and sending readings to Apple Health takes a $9.99-a-month plan. Older accounts keep free syncing.

A Withings account opened on or after October 12 needs a Withings+ membership to send its health data to other apps. That includes Apple Health. Withings added the rule to its developer API plans, and it says new users can't get around it by routing their data through Apple Health or Google's health-sharing system instead.

Accounts created before October 12 are exempt. If you already own a Withings scale or watch and your readings flow into Apple Health today, nothing changes for you.

For a new buyer, it changes the math. Withings+ costs $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year in the US. Gadgets & Wearables reported that some new owners have already hit it: after setting up a Body scale and turning on Apple Health export, the Withings app showed them a Withings+ subscription screen.

The rule sits on Withings' Start for Free API plan, and it covers apps that are already on the market, not only new ones. The Enterprise plan lifts the requirement for specific use cases.

Plenty of people bought Withings hardware because it works with other brands. A Withings scale on the bathroom floor, an Apple Watch on the wrist and Apple Health holding both is a common setup. Withings leaned into that earlier this year, when it expanded health data sharing with Samsung.

Withings says subscription revenue pays for clinical validation, regulatory work and the infrastructure behind its health platform. It has put extras behind Withings+ before, including the StethO Sense feature on BeamO. That was new analysis. This is a fee to move measurements the scale already took.

If you're shopping for a BodyScan 2 or a ScanWatch 2 and your health data lives in Apple Health, add $99.99 a year to the price before you compare it with anything else. If you already have a Withings account, keep using it rather than opening a new one.
