> NVIDIA's v621.01 driver fixes the Quest Link freezes that have dogged PC owners for about 10 months, so it's time to update.

If Meta Quest Link has been freezing on your PC, update your NVIDIA driver. NVIDIA's game driver v621.01 fixes the bug, and the enterprise driver picked up the fix in v621.14.

The freezes began early this year, after newer NVIDIA drivers came out. In the middle of a session the picture would stop dead, and odd artifacts would fill your view. Restarting the Meta Quest service got you going again, but often only for a few minutes. Not everyone was hit. It only affected some NVIDIA cards, and some people with those cards never saw it.

Meta looked into the problem and said the fault was on NVIDIA's side. The wait for a fix ran to about 10 months. According to NVIDIA, the new driver fixes a bug where the "Meta Horizon Link stream may freeze when connected over USB." So USB is the connection it names.

Skarredghost, the XR developer behind the blog The Ghost Howls, was one of the people stuck with it. He installed v621.14 and used Link for more than a day across AirCar, Gracia, DeoVR and Unity, and he didn't get a single freeze. Then he had to take the driver off again. It conflicts with another application he needs for a VR project he's shipping, so if you depend on specialised software on the same PC, make sure you know how to roll back before you update.

Until now, owners had a few ways around it. You could drop back to driver v591.86 or earlier, which got rid of the freezes but left you on an old driver. You could stay current and turn off Sliced Encoding in the Link settings, which made the freezes less frequent without ending them. Or you could leave Link behind for Virtual Desktop or Steam Link, neither of which had the problem. If you took the first route, you can now move forward again.

Plenty of people will have stuck with those other apps, and they don't need to change anything. Link still has its uses, though. It's how you run apps you own on the Quest PC Store, and until a few months ago it was the only one of these options that worked over a USB cable. Developers get something extra: Link streams passthrough, eye and hand data from the headset to the PC. Someone building a mixed reality app in Unity can press Play and try it right there, without building and running it on the headset each time.

To get the fix, open the NVIDIA App and update to v621.01 or newer, or v621.14 or newer on an enterprise card. If the app gives you trouble, download the driver from NVIDIA's website. Should the freezes stop, you can go back to using Link over your cable the way you did last year.
