> The Series 12's headline health score is built partly from sleep, so it asks Apple Watch owners to change when they charge.

Cherlynn Low counted the lights on the back of both watches in Apple's demo area. Twelve on the Series 12, arranged in a ring, against four in a diamond on the Series 11 she held next to it, in [Engadget's hands-on](https://www.engadget.com/2254467/apple-watch-series-12-hands-on-siri-recap-transcribe-live-rewind-health-sensing/). All of that hardware goes to sampling rate. The Series 12 reads heart rate every five seconds and heart rate variability every five minutes, 60 times and 24 times more often than the Series 11 on Apple's own figures. HRV on an older watch arrives every two to four hours. Low couldn't test the score those readings feed, because Readiness needs seven days of wear before it produces a number.

Readiness is one number between 0 and 10, built from four inputs Apple names: recent activity, training load, vitals and sleep. Three of the four want the watch on you through the day. The fourth wants it on your wrist while you're asleep. Apple's answer to that is [a five-minute charge quoted at up to 10 hours of sleep tracking](https://www.macobserver.com/tips/round-ups/apple-watch-readiness-what-the-score-is-built-from-worth-a-new-watch/), on a watch rated at 24 hours of normal use. Readiness is listed on the Series 12 and Ultra 4 only, from $399, and Apple hasn't published how it weights the four inputs, whether the score reaches Series 9, 10 or 11, or the methodology behind the accuracy study it ran on more than 1,000 people in July and August.
