> Sony is due to hand Meta 419 XR patents worldwide, and 43 U.S. ones have already moved. Neither company has commented.

Sony has moved 43 U.S. patents covering XR headsets to Meta between June and September, according to ZDNet Korea. Road to VR picked up the report on October 7. Sony filed the patents between 2010 and 2022, and they cover information processing for XR applications, head-mounted displays and several types of XR glasses.

The 43 recorded so far are about a quarter of the 180 U.S. patents in a confirmatory assignment agreement the two companies signed in December 2025. The agreement expects 419 patents to change hands worldwide. The other 239 were filed in Japan, China, Korea, Europe and other regions. Neither company has issued a statement.

A transfer this size suggests Sony is scaling back its XR hardware plans, per Road to VR. The PSVR 2 is the case it points to. The headset launched in February 2023 at $550, which is $150 more than the original PSVR, and few anchor games arrived with it: Horizon Call of the Mountain, Firewall Ultra, which is now defunct, and VR modes in Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 4 and Gran Turismo 7. A little over a year later Sony sold a PC adapter that let PSVR 2 owners play SteamVR games on a VR-ready PC.

Sony still sells an enterprise mixed reality headset built with Siemens, and it was one of the largest makers of head-mounted displays before consumer VR took off in the mid-2010s. Road to VR doesn't expect the patents to change Meta's broader hardware plans much. It does see the deal removing a potential rival as Meta works toward the [Meta VR Glasses](https://idevice.com/head/meta-phoenix/roadmap), which are due in spring 2027 for $1,300.
