> iFixit's teardown found an otherwise repairable VR headset, with quick-release straps and magnetic lenses, let down by a cooling fan buried deep inside.

iFixit's teardown of Valve's Steam Frame found a mostly repairable VR headset with one real weak spot: the cooling fan sits buried behind a dense stack of optical assemblies, thermal hardware and cables, and it is a long path to a part that will eventually need cleaning or replacing.

The rest of the headset tears down easily by VR standards. The head strap detaches with quick-release latches, so the rear battery pack is reachable without touching the displays. The lenses attach magnetically to the IPD rail, which makes display and eye-tracking repairs straightforward, even though removing them still means working through some screws and cables. The nose bridge, face cushion and headrest cushion are all replaceable too, no motherboard digging required.

A few other parts are more work than they should be. The battery has no release tabs; iFixit had to pry it loose with isopropyl alcohol. The controllers' thumbsticks are soldered directly to their boards, so swapping a broken one is a bigger job than popping in a new stick.

iFixit will sell Steam Frame replacement parts through its own store, and it says Valve had no input into the teardown or its editorial conclusions despite being Valve's repair partner. Two parts will not be on that store's shelves at launch: replacement batteries and replacement displays. iFixit says it hopes to add batteries later. Valve still covers warranty repairs and replacements on covered units, but that is not the same as being able to fix your own.

None of that changes the Steam Frame's price problem. It starts at $1,059, well above the [Meta Quest 3](https://idevice.com/head/meta-quest/roadmap/quest-3), and the hardware does not come with an equivalently bigger upgrade to match. It handles many Steam games standalone, including Half-Life: Alyx, plus wireless PC streaming and microSD storage expansion. Good repairability does not offset a headset that would have made more sense several years ago, when VR software investment was higher.
