# The iPhone Air 2 rebrand rumor rests on one account

An X account called Early Apple says Apple is exploring scrapping the standard [iPhone 18](https://idevice.com/phones/iphone/roadmap) and handing its name and its $999 price to the [iPhone Air 2](https://idevice.com/phones/iphone-air/roadmap) when the cheaper models arrive in spring 2027, [as MacRumors reported on Tuesday](https://www.macrumors.com/2026/09/08/iphone-air-2-could-replace-iphone-18/). The account is relatively new, of unknown origin, and has no established track record behind it, and its previous outing was an alleged iPhone 18 Pro prototype photo in April.

A year of reporting has put the standard iPhone 18, the iPhone 18e and the Air 2 in the spring 2027 lineup as three separate phones, which is what makes a rebrand this size hard to credit for that cycle. Jon Prosser raised a slower version of the idea months ago, that the ultra-thin design eventually becomes the template for the standard iPhone rather than a separate niche model, and the Air 2 is expected to add a second rear camera, which would remove one of the biggest practical differences between the Air and the standard phone. Apple announces the iPhone 18 Pro, the Pro Max and its first foldable on September 9, with the standard iPhone 18, the 18e and the Air 2 following next spring.
