> De Novo authorization means the FDA had no existing device to measure this against, so the terms it set are the reference point for whatever headset software follows it into an operating room.

[Stryker announced this week](https://9to5mac.com/2026/09/03/apple-vision-pro-was-just-used-in-a-first-of-its-kind-surgery/) that a hip arthroscopy at Duke Health was completed using SportSuite Vision, its app for Apple Vision Pro. The app received FDA De Novo authorization on July 17, and Stryker says that makes it the first app the agency has authorized for intraoperative use with the headset. Arthroscopic procedures usually have a surgeon reading several displays positioned around the operating room, and the app moves that content into the headset instead: arthroscopic video, CT imaging, and Stryker's own HipCheck and HipMap tools.

De Novo is the pathway the FDA uses when there is nothing already on the market to compare a device against, so this is a first in the regulatory sense rather than an approval by analogy. Chad Mather III, the orthopedic surgeon who performed the operation, said: "Using spatial computing enabled me to customize the placement of key clinical information to fit my workflow and access it within the sterile field." Vision Pro has turned up in hospitals plenty of times already, on the strength of what an individual department was willing to try. Clearance for use during the procedure itself is a different threshold, and this is the first Vision Pro app to cross it.
