> If you own the original Vision Pro, you lose very little by not upgrading the hardware. Only Siri voice customization and the better Dictation need the M5.

Apple released visionOS 27 today as a [free update for both Vision Pro headsets](https://www.macrumors.com/2026/09/14/apple-releases-visionos-27/). The headline feature is Siri AI, the rebuilt assistant that can draw on your personal information, and it works with Visual Intelligence so you can ask about objects in the room around you. To install it, open Settings, go to General and choose Software Update. The headset has to come off while it installs.

Almost all of it runs on the original M2 model. Apple keeps [two features for the M5 headset](https://www.macobserver.com/news/visionos-27-m2-vision-pro-two-features-reserved-for-m5-2/): Siri voice customization and its improved on-device Dictation model. The rest of the update is spatial, with a new Thórsmörk Environment, curved windows, immersive Safari environments on supported sites and a way to turn panoramic photos into spatial scenes.
