Meta smart glasses testing police grade facial recognition technology

updated 1h ago

The Short Version

Meta is testing government-grade facial recognition in its smart glasses, capable of identifying people from a kilometer away.

Meta is testing facial recognition in its smart glasses using the same technology governments use to identify prisoners and track suspects from a kilometer away. That's not a privacy concern on the horizon, it's already in prototype. The glasses can identify a stranger's face before you've finished saying hello, and the person being scanned has no idea it's happening. Wearable cameras were already uncomfortable. Wearable police-grade surveillance is a different category entirely.
