Overview

Snap Specs are the first standalone consumer AR glasses built around true spatial augmented reality. Instead of simply projecting a floating display, they anchor digital objects in the real world with six degrees of freedom, all without a phone tether or external compute puck. Snap officially announced Specs at AWE on June 16, 2026, with a $2,195 price tag, lower than the roughly $2,500 many expected before launch. Snap isn’t trying to flood the market immediately. According to The Verge’s Alex Heath, the company plans an initial production run of about 100,000 units, reflecting a measured launch for a first-generation product. Preorders are open now with a $200 fully refundable deposit, with shipments scheduled for fall 2026 in the United States, the United Kingdom, and France.

True AR through see-through waveguides

Transparent waveguide lenses place digital objects directly into the real world instead of projecting a floating screen. Evan Spiegel calls Specs “a way to use computing together in shared experiences in the real world.”

One of the widest AR displays you can buy

Snap’s 51° field of view is equivalent to working on a 24-inch monitor up close or watching a 115-inch TV from about 10 feet away, according to Snap.

20 hours with the charging case

Specs run for up to 4 hours per charge, with the charging case providing four full recharges for about 20 hours away from a wall outlet. That’s 4 hours at a time, not a continuous 20-hour runtime.

40% lighter than Snap’s last Specs

Snap cut the weight by roughly 40% from its fifth-generation developer glasses, while offering two frame sizes: 132g (47mm) and 136g (52mm). It’s the lightest Specs Snap has ever built, though still much heavier than AI-only smart glasses.

Two Snapdragon chips, one job each

Specs use two Qualcomm Snapdragon processors: one handles computer vision and environmental understanding, while the other powers Snap’s AR experiences. Snap hasn’t disclosed the exact chip models.

Four cameras built for true AR

Specs use four cameras: two RGB cameras for photos and video, and two infrared cameras dedicated to hand tracking, spatial mapping, and computer vision. The split lets the glasses see the world as well as capture it.

Electrochromic lenses that darken in seconds

Specs use electrochromic lenses that electronically switch from clear to dark in about 10 seconds. Unlike photochromic lenses, they also darken behind UV-blocking glass, including car windshields.

Design & Fit

1

Prescription-ready with removable inserts

Snap supports prescription lens inserts that clip into the glasses without replacing the waveguide optics. Multiple nose pad sizes help fine-tune the fit.

AI & Software

2

A mature AR app ecosystem from day one

Snap OS launches on consumer Specs with hundreds of existing Lenses built during years of Spectacles developer kits. Recent updates added major capabilities including hand tracking, multiplayer experiences, and new developer APIs.

Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex power Lens Studio, not OpenAI or Gemini

Lens Studio's AI integration is built for coding, not conversation. Developers build Lenses using Claude Code, Cursor, and OpenAI Codex, the same assistants used to write software elsewhere. It is not OpenAI or Gemini answering questions inside the AR experience itself.

Key corporate moveJan 2026

Snap spins AR glasses out as Specs Inc.

Snap announced Specs Inc. as an independent subsidiary on January 28, 2026, inviting minority investors and hiring roughly 100 new roles globally. When Snap cut about 1,000 jobs (16% of staff) company-wide on April 15, 2026, Specs Inc. was explicitly spared — Road to VR reported the subsidiary was actively hiring through the cuts, not affected by them. The move underlined AR glasses as a protected, standalone bet, not a side project inside Snapchat.

Common Questions

When do Snap Specs launch?

Snap Specs are shipping fall 2026 in the US, UK, and France. Pre-orders opened June 16, 2026 — the day of the AWE 2026 keynote — with a $200 fully refundable deposit.

How much do Snap Specs cost?

Snap confirmed a starting price of $2,195 at AWE 2026 on June 16, 2026. Pre-orders are open with a $200 fully refundable deposit.

What makes Snap Specs different from Meta Ray-Ban, Samsung Galaxy Glasses, or Xreal Aura?

Snap Specs have true see-through AR lenses that place digital objects in your field of view — no phone, no puck, no tether, running standalone on dual Snapdragon chips. That's different from Meta Ray-Ban, which has no display at all on its mainstream models; its display version (Ray-Ban Meta Display) pairs with a separate wristband called the Neural Band rather than putting imagery directly in the lens. The closer comparison is Xreal Aura, which also ships in fall 2026 with a wider 70-degree field of view — but Aura runs through a separate wired compute puck, while Specs are fully self-contained at a narrower 51-degree field of view.

Do Snap Specs require a phone?

No. Snap Specs are fully standalone. No phone tether, no external puck required. The hardware runs Snap OS on dual Qualcomm Snapdragon chips — one dedicated to the OS and AR experiences, one dedicated to computer vision. Battery life is 4 hours of mixed use on a single charge, with approximately 20 hours total using the included charging case.

What apps and content work on Snap Specs?

Snap Specs run Snap OS and can draw on the 4 million Lenses built by Snap’s developer community including games, AR art, navigation overlays, and communication filters. Developers can build using the Commerce Kit and Native Development Kit, with Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor integrations available in Lens Studio. Launch partners include LEGO, ILM Immersive (Lucasfilm), and Niantic.

How do you control Snap Specs?

Hand gesture and voice. Opening your palm opens the main menu. The primary navigation is hands-free using pointing and pinching gestures, with high-speed hand tracking backed by environment meshing and spatial anchoring. Voice commands work throughout Snap OS.

What is Snap OS?

Snap OS is Snap’s proprietary operating system for Spectacles and consumer Specs hardware. Designed specifically for AR glasses and spatial computing, it powers the Lens runtime, hand tracking, voice interaction, spatial understanding, and other core AR experiences. Unlike devices built on Google’s Android XR platform, Snap OS is Snap’s own operating system. Snap OS 2.0 was released in September 2025 and powers the consumer Specs launching in fall 2026.

Do Snap Specs support prescription lenses?

Yes. The lenses on Snap Specs are removable and support prescription inserts. Multiple nose pad sizes are included to fit different face shapes.

What is Specs Inc.?

Specs Inc. is the independent subsidiary Snap spun out in January 2026 to build and operate its AR glasses hardware. It operates separately from Snap's social media business, with its own leadership and the ability to take on outside investors. The spin-out signals Snap's commitment to AR hardware as a long-term bet, independent of how the core Snapchat business performs.

Have Snap Specs shipped yet, or are they still pre-order?

Pre-orders are open as of 2026. Snap Specs are shipping to consumers who order — they are not vaporware. Snap (Specs Inc.) is prioritizing US availability first; international shipping availability depends on region. Check snap.com/spectacles for current lead times.

What is the display field of view on Snap Specs?

Snap has not published a specific FOV number for consumer Snap Specs. Developer-edition Spectacles (2024) used a waveguide display with a limited but usable AR overlay. Consumer Snap Specs were designed with a wider FOV as a key upgrade over the dev edition. Expect Snap to disclose the final FOV spec closer to wide availability.
