Apple Watch SE 3 vs Watch Ultra 4: which should you buy?

Get the Apple Watch Ultra 4. It has the far brighter screen, the much bigger battery and the tougher case. Apple rates it at up to 50 hours, or 84 in Low Power Mode, with a display that reaches 3,000 nits. Its Max Extended Workout mode tracks outdoor runs for up to 45 hours, including 100-mile races.

Who should get the Apple Watch SE 3

Get the SE 3 if you want the basics done well for much less. It brings a nightly sleep score and sleep stages, and you can set it up from your own iPhone for a child with no phone. It is also far lighter, at less than half the weight of the Ultra 4 in its smaller size.

The differences that matter

Water and adventure come first. The Ultra 4 is built for diving trips and dusty trails, where the SE 3 is built for the pool. Its Hiking workout records pace, distance, elevation gain and calories burned.

Safety comes second. The Ultra 4 sends Emergency SOS, Messages and Find My over satellite when you have no signal. The SE 3 has no satellite features.

Health comes third. The Ultra 4 adds hypertension notifications, an ECG, blood oxygen and heart rate variability. The SE 3 skips those. Both need an iPhone, because Apple Watch works only with iPhone.

Price and value

The SE 3 costs $249 (checked Nov. 3, 2026) and the Ultra 4 costs $699.99 (checked Nov. 3, 2026), so the SE 3 is $451 cheaper. That is a lot of money. It buys a watch built for the trail, the sea and the long race.

The Ultra 4 is the better watch. The SE 3 is the better deal if you never leave the pavement.
