Last updated

Nothing built its name on being the rebel in the room, and Headphone (1) Pro carries that attitude: transparent glass sides over three drivers per ear cup, a Flat EQ switch tuned with Metropolis Studios, and up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on. These aren't headphones you wear or carry to disappear.

Nothing Headphone (1) Pro review: tested against AirPods Max

Wearing Nothing Headphone (1) Pro in black, close up
Retro looks, room-filling sound, a lighter fit and a case like nothing we've seen. We lived with them next to AirPods Max, and one pair kept winning.

About Nothing

Nothing is a London technology company, co-founded and led by Carl Pei. It builds smartphones, audio products and AI tools around a design language it calls transparent in appearance and ethos, which is why you can see inside almost everything it makes.

How we read this
  • We read store prices every day and keep every read. The price shown is the newest read from the retailer named.
  • A read older than 36 hours is never shown as the current price. It reads "last seen" and carries no buy link.
  • “30-day low” is the lowest of our own reads for this product in the last 30 days, not a retailer’s claim. We print the number of reads beside it, and we say nothing about a low until a product has a week of reads.
  • “Lowest known”, where it appears, is older price history from published reports and imports. It is shown only when it is lower than the 30-day low, and it is not counted as reads.
  • The verdict is worked out from the price, the history and whether a newer model is coming. It never depends on who pays us.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about Nothing Headphone (1) Pro

Top questions

How much does Nothing Headphone (1) Pro cost?
It costs $399 in the US.
Does Nothing Headphone (1) Pro pause when I take it off?
Yes. Auto-wear detection pauses your music when you take them off.
Which codecs does Nothing Headphone (1) Pro support?
AAC, SBC and LDAC for music, and LC3 for broadcast audio.
Should I buy Nothing Headphone (1) Pro or AirPods Max?
If you listen mostly on one device, we prefer Headphone (1) Pro: it sounded clearer and more open to us, it's lighter, and it costs $399 against $549 for AirPods Max 2. If you live across several Apple devices and want hands-free Siri, AirPods Max fit that world better. Our full review and the comparison on this page set out the rest.
How long does the Nothing Headphone (1) Pro battery last?
Nothing rates it at up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on and up to 68 hours with it off. On LDAC the figures are 28 and 53 hours.
How heavy is Nothing Headphone (1) Pro?
The headphones weigh 327 g. The hardshell case weighs 383.5 g.
Can Nothing Headphone (1) Pro connect to two devices at once?
Yes. Turn on Dual Connection in the Nothing X app and it connects to two devices at the same time. In our testing it didn't hand off on its own: we had to pause music on the Mac before pressing play on the iPhone.
How good is the Nothing Headphone (1) Pro noise cancelling?
Nothing rates it at up to 46 dB, from 10 mics and an adaptive mode that adjusts to your surroundings. Working from home, it shut out the household for us.
Does Nothing Headphone (1) Pro have an on/off switch?
Yes, a physical power switch on the ear cup. AirPods Max have none: Apple's answer is to keep them in the Smart Case, where they drop into an ultralow power mode.
What's in the Nothing Headphone (1) Pro box?
The headphones, a hardshell case with strap loops, a 3.5 mm audio cable, a USB-C cable and a quick start guide.

Price and models
