The Pixel 8 could add hands-free notification replies through Google Assistant.

Did it turn out to be true?

Not comparable. This measured a different thing from the number the company published, so the two cannot be compared. It was reported on Aug 24, 2023 in Android Authority, and we could not tell who reported it first. That was 41 days before Google Pixel 8 was announced on Oct 4, 2023. The leak says Pixel 8 'could add' hands-free notification replies. That is a possibility claim, not an assertion that the feature would ship, so the shipped product cannot falsify it.
