Ultra 4 is expected to get the first new watch chip in three generations

What to know

Apple Watch Ultra 4 runs a new chip called the S11, according to Apple's spec page. Series 12 uses the same chip.

Series 11, Ultra 3 and SE 3 all used the older S10, which was built on the same design as the S9 before it. That makes the S11 the first new watch processor in three generations.

Reports before launch said the watches would get a new chip but called it the S12. The change was right and the name was wrong.
