Apple has laid off people from the team that builds Vision Pro. AppleInsider reports it from a single source of its own, and the source could not say how many: the cuts hit employees tied to Apple's VR team, the Apple Vision Group, and similar positions. The outlet ties the timing to incoming chief executive John Ternus, who has reportedly put the category on ice.

What is being claimed here is narrower than the headline suggests, and the reporting says so itself. The team has not been disbanded. The product line is not being killed, and AppleInsider's own conclusion is that it is highly unlikely Ternus intends to. The outlet also says it is holding back further detail about the layoffs until it can confirm it. One source, one outlet, no number, and nobody else has matched it yet.

The reasons given are the interesting part, because all three are about physics and money rather than strategy. Component prices went up and Apple raised the price of a headset that was already expensive. Buyers who want a computer on their face are choosing glasses over something they wear over their eyes. And the thin, light, affordable Vision Pro that would answer both problems cannot be built yet: the technology either does not exist or costs too much. Apple's stated priority now is Siri AI and smart glasses.

Restructuring inside the group has been going on for months, per the same reporting. Vision Pro was always partly a development vehicle, a way to build visionOS in public while the glasses that need it are years out, and visionOS 27 shipped in June. The software is still arriving. In the three years since the first demo, the headset only got live baseball this month.

Read it next to what the category did in the same quarter and the shape is the same from two directions. Smart Analytics Global puts VR headset shipments down 79 percent year over year in Q2 2026 while AI glasses rose 776 percent. A company that reads that number and moves engineers from the headset to the glasses is not abandoning a bet. It is paying attention.

None of which tells you whether a second Vision Pro exists. Apple has not said, this reporting does not claim to know, and our own claim set still holds both readings open. visionOS 27 shipped in June. The team shipping it is smaller than it was.
