Apple Watch Series 12

Apple published the study behind its Series 12 heart rate claim

The accuracy claim now has named rivals, a chest-strap reference and a result, though it's still a study Apple ran on its own watch.

Ask about the Apple Watch Series 12

Apple has published the study behind its claim that the Series 12 and Ultra 4 have the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable. Testing ran at five sites in the US and Malaysia over July and August, and 1,254 of the 1,460 adults Apple enrolled produced usable paired readings. Each person wore a Series 12 on one wrist and a rival on the other: a Garmin Forerunner 970, Pixel Watch 4, Huawei Watch 5, Galaxy Watch 8 or WHOOP 5. Participants also wore an Oura Ring 5 on an index finger. A Polar H10 chest strap was the reference. Across 159 comparisons, the Series 12 came out statistically better in 139.

The Mac Observer found that at launch, Apple backed the claim with a single line: more than 1,000 participants over July and August, against leading competitors it didn't name. There was no protocol and no results. The study now has both. Testing covered outdoor runs, treadmill intervals, cycling, HIIT and strength training, plus everyday stretches like desk work, cooking and walking. It also went after cadence lock, where an optical sensor mistakes your running rhythm for a pulse. It's still a study Apple ran on its own watch, and it's about reading heart rate, not spotting a heart condition.

Update, Sep 12, 6:24 AM CT: Apple has published no privacy notice or retention policy for the Series 12's five-second heart readings, per The Mac Observer, only its existing Health app wording.

Update, Sep 11, 9:21 PM CT: The Mac Observer found that only the heart sensors in Apple's all-new Health Sensing System are new; blood oxygen and temperature carry over from Series 11.

Update, Sep 11, 9:18 PM CT: No Series 11 baseline has been published for Apple's 60x and 24x frequency claims, The Mac Observer found, so neither multiple can be checked.

Update, Sep 11, 10:35 AM CT: AppleInsider found one resting test where the Pixel Watch 4 read heart rate more accurately than the Series 12, by under half a beat per minute.

APPLE WATCH ULTRA3 min read

The Ultra 4 lost GLONASS, and the Series 12 kept it

Losing GLONASS probably costs Ultra 4 owners little, since the watch still reads four other satellite systems on two frequencies. Nobody has tested it yet, and Apple has not said why it changed.
