Ask about the Apple Watch Series 12

Apple Watch Series 12 reaches stores on Friday, September 18, at $399, the same price as the Series 11, which Apple has now discontinued. MacRumors published a side-by-side of the two watches that runs to more than 25 differences, a long list after a year when the Series 11 added just four changes over the Series 10. The design has not changed for a third year. The S11 chip is the first notable performance upgrade since the S9 in 2023, RAM doubles to 4GB, and Apple is calling the new sensor package the Health Sensing System.

That system reads heart rate every five seconds, sixty times more often than before. Apple’s marketing images for the Series 12 and Ultra 4 show the small round Heart Rate complication displaying a live number instead of an app icon, a change 9to5Mac spotted in the marketing material. On a Series 11 or Ultra 3 running the watchOS 27 release candidate, that same complication is still just a launcher. Fifteen minutes of charging now buys up to twelve hours of normal use, up from eight on the Series 11.

Update, Sep 12, 1:30 AM CT: Series 12 GPS battery runs ten hours against the Series 11's eight, while the everyday rating stays at 24, per Tom's Guide.

Update, Sep 12, 12:34 AM CT: Ceramic joins aluminum and titanium on the Series 12, and stainless steel has gone from Apple's list entirely, per The Mac Observer.

Update, Sep 12, 12:31 AM CT: The ceramic Series 12 measures 43mm and 47mm, and The Mac Observer found its bands still listed under 42mm and 46mm.

Update, Sep 12, 12:00 AM CT: The Mac Observer found Apple has published no guidance on whether older bands still fit the 42mm and 46mm cases.

The Ultra 4 lost GLONASS, and the Series 12 kept it

Losing GLONASS probably costs Ultra 4 owners little, since the watch still reads four other satellite systems on two frequencies. Nobody has tested it yet, and Apple has not said why it changed.
