Apple's fall iPhone lineup has nothing under a thousand dollars

Apple has pushed its affordable models to spring. The only new hardware this month is a Pro or a two thousand dollar folding screen.

By 3 min read

Apple is expected to announce three phones at its Surprise and Shine event on September 9: the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the company's first foldable. The standard iPhone 18 and the iPhone Air 2 are reported to be moving to early 2027, arriving alongside the iPhone 18e, so the fall lineup has nothing under $1,000 in it. Anyone on an older iPhone who was hoping for a straightforward upgrade this month is waiting a few more months instead.

The foldable should measure around 5.5 inches closed and 7.8 inches open at a little over 4mm thick, and the leaks so far have it dropping Face ID for a Touch ID power button and carrying no telephoto lens. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple initially targeted a $1,999 starting price, and that the current run-up in memory prices may push it to $2,199 or beyond. John Ternus runs the keynote as Apple's new chief executive, having taken over from Tim Cook.

Update, Sep 8, 11:00 PM CT: Bloomberg reported that Apple's foldable iPhone is called the iPhone Duo and will start at roughly $2,000.

Update, Sep 8, 9:15 PM CT: Bloomberg reported that rising component costs pushed Apple's target starting price for the foldable iPhone from $1,999 to $2,199, per 9to5Mac.
