Satvir Kaur, the UK's safeguarding minister, told MPs in a debate reported by The Guardian that "The government is looking into options to restrict smart glasses in certain settings and restricting the sale to certain users." She didn't say which users. The NHS and the Department for Education are each drawing up their own smart glasses policies, and courts in England and Wales already ban Meta's glasses from courtrooms.
The push comes after women reported waking up after nights out to find videos of themselves had gone viral, filmed by men wearing smart glasses. Hamburg has banned smart glasses in public spaces, Australia barred camera glasses from government workspaces in September, and in the US, ICE has banned Ray-Ban Meta glasses for its agents. Nothing is law in the UK yet. Kaur also said the glasses help visually impaired people get around.
