Smart glasses won't be allowed in any school in the Australian state of Victoria from 2027. The state government has banned them from every public, independent and Catholic school, and from school camps too, according to Gizmodo. It's one rule for the whole state, which had an estimated 7.1 million people as of March 2026.
Gabrielle Williams, Victoria's Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, said the government is "setting clear rules across every Victorian school" so that "students can focus on learning." She didn't leave room for exceptions. "Smart glasses have no place in our classrooms or on school grounds," she said.
Independent and Catholic schools are covered along with government ones, so moving to a private school won't get a pair of glasses back into class. The rule follows students onto school camps as well, not just into the classroom.
In China, some students who can't afford their own pair of smart glasses have been renting them to cheat in exams. The glasses can pull up information without a student ever taking out a phone. In the U.S., the College Board has banned smart glasses from the SAT.
American schools are going about it one district at a time. Districts in Florida and Massachusetts have banned the glasses. Utah's statewide law against phones in school covers smart glasses as well, though it was written for phones. Few U.S. bans go as far as Victoria's.
New York has barred smart glasses from its state courts since July. Those courts already banned recording of any kind, and they still named the glasses, because the recording light is easy to miss. Hamburg keeps them off its trams and out of its public pools. Norway's government plans to propose a temporary ban on camera glasses in public places, and its list includes schools. Norway is still at the proposal stage, and an advisory panel there still has to settle whether camera-free glasses, like the ones Even Realities makes, count. Victoria has already decided, and it has a start year.
For families in Victoria, the glasses stay home from 2027, on camps as well as in class. In the U.S., it depends on your district, so check the school's own rules before a pair goes in a backpack. Anyone sitting the SAT has to leave them behind.
