The Curry Pixel Watch 5 band's coating wears off

Google is charging about €31 more for the workout strap, and its own marketing fine print says the water-repellent coating wears off and it will not cover the damage.

The Stephen Curry edition of the Pixel Watch 5 is an ordinary silver 45mm cellular model with a different strap, at €579.99 in Europe. That is €30.99 over the €549 expected for the standard 45mm cellular version. The band is a woven loop in stone grey and taupe with orange borders, a striped tail, and a brown label reading STEPHEN CURRY and #LockIn. Leaked marketing materials place it at the Made by Google event on August 12, and MyMobiles and @OnLeaks are behind the image gallery. Supply will be limited and the edition will not reach every region.

The band's selling point is a surface treatment that makes the fabric water-repellent, which matters because the watch is rated 5 ATM and IP68 (safe for swimming, sealed against dust) while its stock straps have no water resistance at all. According to Google, that coating is temporary, it will degrade or wear off through normal use and environmental exposure, and the company will not be liable for moisture damage once it has gone. Google and Curry sold a $129.99 Fitbit Air Special Edition this spring, same orange, same #LockIn.

Update, Aug 8, 11:01 AM CT: The standard 45mm cellular Pixel Watch 5 is expected at $529 in the US, per Gadgets & Wearables, with retail reported for August 20.
