Google is getting ready to remove Safety Signal from the LTE versions of the Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3. Android Authority spotted code strings in version 5.1.0.990450614 of the Pixel Watch app that warn users the feature is being discontinued, and one prompt card is titled “Safety signal is going away”. Google hasn't said when it will stop working or whether anything will take its place.
Safety Signal is part of the Google Health Premium subscription. It gives those watches a cellular connection when they have no carrier plan of their own, which keeps emergency calls, Safety Check, Emergency SOS and fall detection working when the phone is somewhere else. It's offered in the US, Canada, the UK and Germany. Owners who already have a carrier plan on the watch don't need it. Everyone else may have to activate a plan to keep those features away from their phone, according to Android Police, which also reports that newer Pixel Watch models swapped Safety Signal for satellite SOS.
