A federal jury in the Southern District of California ruled on Friday that Apple owes Taction Technology $5,721,961,750 for infringing patents tied to the Taptic Engine, the haptics in both the Apple Watch and the iPhone, CNBC reported. According to the jury’s verdict form, Taction proved infringement of two claims in one patent and one in the other, and Apple failed to show any of those three claims were invalid. The jury also decided Apple had not infringed willfully, so it was not a knowing violation.
Taction sued in 2021, and its lawyer said the company waited five and a half years to get to trial. A San Diego federal judge ruled in 2023 that Apple did not infringe, and the Federal Circuit revived the case in 2025. Apple told CNBC that the Taptic Engine is fundamentally different from Taction’s technology and that the damages are entirely unsupported by the facts. Apple says it will appeal.
