The Mac Observer went looking for the iPhone Duo's user guide this week and found that it doesn't exist. Apple's iPhone manuals index still stops at the iPhone 17 family and the iPhone Air. There is no Apple Support article for the Duo, and none for the iPhone 18 Pro, the Apple Watch Series 12, the Ultra 4 or the AirPods 5 either. Six products were announced on September 9 and not one of them has a support library.

Apple's support pages have always turned up close to availability rather than on announcement day, and the iPhone 17 manuals sitting on that index now arrived the same way. This year the phone has a hinge.

Pre-orders open on Friday, October 16 at $1,999, and the phone ships a week later on October 23. Anyone ordering is buying on a product page, a specifications page and a press release. The inner display is a 7.6-inch folding panel with a nano-texture finish and a scratch-resistant coating rather than the Ceramic Shield 2 on the outside, and Apple has published nothing about how to clean it. Nothing about dust or grit sitting between the two halves when you close it, on a phone rated IP68 to six meters for thirty minutes. Nothing about temperature and the hinge, which Apple says carries more than 100 components and custom adhesives for flex relief.

Apple hasn't said whether a battery replacement on the dual-battery system swaps one cell or both, what an inner display repair costs, what a hinge repair costs, or whether a screen protector on the folding panel is a good idea or a bad one. There is no per-device AppleCare+ price for the Duo.

The tech specs give resolutions, dimensions, IP68, ports and sensors, with no fold-cycle rating and no crease measurement. The environmental report covers recycled content and packaging and says nothing about repairability or parts. The developer site has six sessions and design guidance, written for people shipping apps rather than for the person holding the phone. What Apple has published is detailed and all of it is marketing: the Duo is thoroughly documented as a thing to buy and not at all as a thing to own.

Apple describes the inner display cover as a custom polymer with 40 percent higher stiffness than the industry standard, sitting over high-strength glass layers. It names no test, no standard and no cycle count next to that sentence, which is where the missing library bites hardest.

iOS 27 reaches other iPhones on Monday, September 14, but the Duo ships on iOS 27.1, a version Apple has neither dated nor released. There are no release notes for it. Apple's About iOS 27 Updates page does not exist, its security releases index still ends at iOS 26.6.2 from September 8, and the support article on updating your iPhone was last touched on December 5, 2025.

Monday, September 14 is when iOS 27 ships and Apple's support pages usually move with it. The week of October 16 is when Duo pre-orders open, and the pattern the iPhone 18 Pro sets would put the library close behind. Until one of those two dates lands, Apple has published dates, prices and specifications, and nothing about living with the phone.
