Meta has started removing Instagram accounts that use its own glasses to record strangers, after Business Insider reported the practice. Two pick-up artist accounts, each with more than a million followers, were deactivated under the bullying and harassment rules Meta already had on the books. Instagram's head put the standard plainly: the company does not want people "surreptitiously taking videos of other people". The videos ran from staged pickup encounters to footage taken in workplaces.
Enforcement after the fact is a strange remedy for a recording that already happened, and Digital Trends reads the crackdown as damage control rather than a fix. Nothing about the product changed, which is why the week's other stories are the same story: an app charging $3 to detect the glasses climbed the App Store, and stickers appeared that defeat the recording light. Lifehacker's advice is the tell, telling readers to look for thicker frames and the LED, which is what you do when the platform cannot help you in the moment.
