Some Ray-Ban Meta glasses have been waking up Meta AI and recording audio when nobody said "Hey Meta." Owners described it on Reddit, 9to5Google reported, and some of them had the wake word switched off entirely. One person said it happened on three separate pairs.
Meta told Android Authority the problem has been "resolved." It didn't say what caused it.
The recordings were audio only, and the glasses lit the LED on the inside of the frame while they ran. That light is there for the wearer. It's how an owner would have noticed, if they happened to look.
In the same statement, Meta pointed owners to the voice logs of their Meta AI interactions, which you can review and delete in settings at any time.
Meta's glasses were already under steady scrutiny over privacy, and most of it has been about the camera. People have covered or damaged the small light on the frame that tells others a video is running. Meta has answered that in software. A mandatory update turns the camera off if someone tampers with the light, and another fix stops a recording when the light gets covered partway through.
This time nobody tampered with anything.
The glasses did it on their own, including for some owners who'd switched the wake word off. That's a different kind of problem from someone putting a sticker over the LED, because the owner wasn't the one breaking the rules. They were the one being recorded.
If you own a pair, go through your Meta AI voice history in settings and delete anything you didn't ask for. If the glasses keep lighting up without a prompt now that Meta says the bug is fixed, tell Meta, because by its own account that shouldn't be happening anymore.
