Meta will stop sending new software to the Quest 2 and Quest Pro after March 2027, 9to5Google reports, citing a post on Meta's developer blog. The last version for both headsets will be OS v213. Security fixes keep coming until the end of 2027.
Meta says it isn't removing cross-play or blocking Quest 2 players, so games that support the headset keep running after these dates. A game that needs a feature Meta adds after March 2027 won't run on these two. Developers also have to give players six months' notice before they drop a game's support.
That's a long run for the Quest 2. It came out six years ago, and by the end of 2027 it will have had just over seven years of security updates. It's still the best-selling VR headset ever made, at around 20 million units. The Quest Pro gets about two years less, since it only arrived in October 2022. Both use the same aging chip, which is the reason Meta gives for ending feature work on them.
Meta's newer headsets are the Quest 3 at $599 and the Quest 3S at $349. Its next one, the $1,299 Meta VR Glasses, is due early next year with a newer chip, a sharper display and a much lighter build.
If you own a Quest 2 or Quest Pro, nothing changes this winter. Plan on new games and app features thinning out through 2027. If you're shopping, skip both, even used: the $349 Quest 3S is newer, and newer hardware is where Meta says its software work is headed.
