Samsung is speccing a screen for glasses it has not shipped

The panel would be smaller than a fingernail and show 16 shades per color channel. It is built for arrows and notifications.

Samsung unveiled its first smart glasses a few months ago and still has not put them on sale. The Elec reports that it has already sent Samsung Display a formal request for a microdisplay for the second generation, spelling out form factor, active display area, color reproduction and target pricing. The panel would measure 0.2 inches or smaller so it fits inside a standard eyeglass frame, with an optical magnification system projecting the image into the wearer's field of view. Late 2027 or early 2028 is the window Samsung is working towards.

The ambition is deliberately narrow. Samsung is targeting a 4-bit gradation level, which works out at 16 brightness levels per color channel, because legible text and interface elements matter more here than photos and video. It wants that information directly in front of the eye, where the Meta Ray-Ban Display puts its screen off to one side. Two things are still open. Samsung has not decided between one display for one eye and a pair of them, and the panel technology is unsettled too, with W-OLEDoS, RGB OLEDoS and LEDoS all being weighed against field of view, color and cost.

Update, Sep 10, 10:05 AM CT: The Elec reported late 2027 for Samsung's color-display glasses, with a camera-and-audio pair carrying no display at all shipping first, per 9to5Google.

Samsung glasses already obey a rule California has not passed

Samsung's AI glasses disable recording if you cover the indicator light, which is close to what California's SB 1130 would require of any camera wearable sold in the state. The bill is not law yet, and the workaround people found on other glasses defeats the light rather than the statute.
