The third iPhone Duo, expected in 2028, should get an inside screen about half an inch bigger, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said on his Power On podcast. The Duo that goes on sale October 23 has a 7.6-inch folding screen inside. Gurman put the new one in "the high sevens, very low eights," and said he's not hearing anything like 8.5 or 9 inches.

The outside screen, the 5.4-inch one you use with the phone closed, wouldn't necessarily get much bigger, he said. He compared the change to how Apple has nudged up its biggest Pro iPhone over the years, from 6.7 inches on the iPhone 15 Pro Max to 6.9 inches on the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Gurman was also asked if Apple will add a telephoto camera, the lens that lets you zoom in on something far away without the picture going soft. "That's on their list," he said. "I don't know when that's coming, but that's gonna be hard to do." He said the problem isn't cost. He called it "purely a physics issue in terms of the depth needed." The depth he means is room from front to back, and each half of a folding phone is thin. He said he's curious to see how Apple ends up solving it.

In September, Gurman expected smaller parts to bring both Face ID and a dedicated telephoto camera to the Duo by its third generation. Now he won't put a date on the zoom lens. Face ID is going the other way. Apple is testing second-generation Duo prototypes with Face ID under the outer screen, a year ahead of that schedule, though it hasn't decided if the feature ships in the model expected next fall. He said Apple is also looking at adding an Action button, which the first Duo doesn't have.

If you've ordered the $1,999 Duo, you aren't missing a big screen jump by buying now, since the 2028 model only grows by about half an inch. The bigger trade-off is unlocking: yours works with your fingerprint or your Apple Watch, and Face ID may not come until next fall's model. If a zoom camera is what you're waiting for, Gurman can't tell you when it's coming, so it's not a reason to hold off.
