Apple has added the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, the M6 Mac mini and the M5 Mac Studio to its Self Service Repair store, AppleInsider reported. Phone owners can order anything from a replacement display to a whole camera assembly, and the store carries Apple's repair manuals too. The two desktops are the models Apple introduced in August. You don't have to buy the tools: Apple rents a repair kit for seven days for $49, and you send most of the old parts back to get a credit toward the new ones.
Apple started the program in April 2022 under pressure from right-to-repair advocates, and they still criticize it as a way to head off antitrust complaints rather than a real answer for independent repair shops. The parts aren't cheap. These phones and desktops are tightly sealed, and one slip can wreck the electronics inside, so unless you've done this kind of repair before, an Apple Store or an authorized repair shop is still the safer choice and usually the cheaper one once you count your time.
