Apple has paused development of its camera-equipped AI pendant, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday. The device was built to clip onto clothing or hang around your neck. Apple has never acknowledged it exists.
In MacRumors' account of that report, the prototype is a thin circular disc about the size of an AirTag, made of aluminum and glass, with a single button on its side. It's slightly thicker than an AirTag. Reports in August added two outward-facing cameras, a speaker and a magnetic charging pad on the back.
Its camera would show Siri whatever is in front of you, and Siri would answer questions about where you are or what you're looking at. That runs on Visual Intelligence, the Apple feature that identifies what a camera sees. There's no screen, no projector and no haptics, so nothing on the pendant itself shows you what it heard or saw. It was only ever going to be as good as Siri.
The pendant had been rumored for as early as 2027. A pause makes that date hard to reach. Mark Gurman had already compared it to the Humane AI Pin, a screenless clip-on that failed.
Apple is also reported to be working on AirPods with cameras that would do the same job, feeding Siri a view of what's around you, and those could arrive as soon as 2027. AI smart glasses are on the same list. So is a screenless fitness band in the style of Whoop, which Bloomberg reported the same day and which isn't expected before 2028.
