His Majesty's Courts and Tribunals Service has banned Meta glasses from every court in England and Wales. Anyone who arrives wearing a pair has them confiscated at the door and handed back on the way out. The service is responsible for all criminal, civil and family courts. According to The Guardian, a spokesperson for the court said, "There are clear restrictions on taking images or videos within courts and tribunals which is why the use of Meta glasses is prohibited." Recording inside a court building without permission is already a crime and can be prosecuted as contempt of court.
The court service carved out an exception for smartphones so long as they are not used to record, and refused the same exception for glasses, because nobody can fix a phone to their face without anyone noticing. New York announced a similar courtroom ban recently. Meta declined to comment. At a high-profile trial about social media addiction, members of Mark Zuckerberg's entourage wore the glasses into the room. The judge had to threaten contempt before they came off.
