Demand for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 has run past what Samsung planned for, and the part holding production back is the display driver IC, the small chip that drives the pixels on a screen. ZDNet Korea reported that Samsung's own System LSI division designs the Fold 8's driver and the Taiwanese foundry UMC builds it on a 22nm line whose capacity is already spoken for. Samsung asked for an expedited run to get more wafers through faster and was told that would be difficult. A finished driver takes around four months to produce, so placing a bigger order does nothing for this quarter.

So Samsung is taking driver chips it had already secured for its 2027 phones and pushing them into Fold 8 production now, which trades next year's schedule for this quarter's shelves. The strain shows on Samsung's own store, where the Fold 8 is partly out of stock, and the company has already set out to build an extra million units. The other half of the launch went the other way: early demand for the clamshell Z Flip 8 has lagged expectations, and it is the wider passport-shaped Fold that buyers went for.
