The 2026 watches will change on health and speed, not on design

Gurman reports Apple is in late-stage testing of Series 12 and Ultra 4 with no major design overhaul planned for either. The work is inside the case: health and fitness tracking improvements, and the first meaningful chip and speed bump in several generations.

What to know

What to know

Apple's 2026 watches would not get a big design change, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in July 2026. He said the focus is better health and fitness tracking and a long-awaited bump in chips and speed.

After Apple's September 9 event, AppleInsider reported that a ceramic option is the only visible change on Series 12. The Mac Observer reported the health tools get small tune-ups to make workout and sleep data more reliable.

What this is made of

What this is made of

  • Blood pressure notifications are expected across the whole watch line

DigiTimes reported blood pressure work across Apple's 2026 watch line, framed around Ultra 4. The report does not say the feature is coming to Series 12 specifically, and it is unclear how it would differ from Apple's existing hypertension notifications.

    Wrong

  • A high-end 2026 watch may get an eight-sensor array

DigiTimes described an eight-sensor ring for a high-end 2026 Apple Watch in August 2025. That is a separate, earlier report from the May 2026 blood-pressure story, and it does not name Series 12.

  • Sleep tracking will add new metrics, including time in bed

Macworld found new sleep-tracking metrics for Apple Watch, including time in bed, in a leaked internal build of iOS 26, slated for iOS 28.

  • Cycle Tracking will add perimenopause and menopause support

watchOS 27 adds perimenopause and menopause support to Cycle Tracking. The Health app can notify you when logged cycle patterns suggest perimenopause. Apple says these notifications are not intended to replace diagnosis, monitoring or treatment.

    Right

  • Series 12 will ship without the AI health coach

Series 12 shipped without the AI health coach reported as Project Mulberry. Apple announced a readiness score, Recovery HRV, Health Age and a redesigned Health app, and no coaching service.

    Right

  • The heart-rate sensor could take readings all day, not just during workouts

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports Apple is testing a way for the Series 12 heart-rate sensor to collect data continuously, in place of the semi-random intervals and workout windows it uses today. The same report pairs it with a rebuilt health app showing more wellness metrics, in the manner of Whoop and Oura.
